Tutorial #1 Wiki Question (2 marks):
Review the Tutorial 1 movies, and describe Jonathan Ives and his theory of 'undesign' in relation to his work at Macintosh. (200 words)

Jonathan Ives is Apple computer’s vice-president of design who is thought as the savior of the company. The two movies talked about Ives’ first experience with a Mac computer and his curiosity with products since little. He always took things apart since little and wondered why products were designed the way they were. He argues that the most important qualities about Apple products are their ease and simplicity. Ives’ theory of ‘undesign’ is the idea that design is not something that you add in at the end. Instead it is something that you have to build in from the beginning. It is about working from the outside of a product to the inside. Everything defers to the display. “It is almost like getting design out of the way, forms not just in arbitrary ways; it feels almost un-designed.”, Ives explained. He argues that products must have hierarchy of what’s important and what’s not, and the hierarchy should come naturally to its users. Ives used the indicator light on the Macbook as an example in one of the videos saying that when it lights up, users will automatically know that it is indicating something even though they are not told so.
